Demons as musician, Taymouth Hours, The British Library, London.

BL Yates Thompson MS 13, fol. 140 (14th century English).

Tempera and gold leaf on parchment.

— follow DAIMONPHANIA, all the beauty in the Underworld.

In this miniature we can see two Demons playing musical instruments often considered sinful by medieval iconography: one of them is playing a bagpipes, the symbol of vanity, because it is a lot filled with air -
also associated with flatulence; the other one is playing a flute, often linked to oral sex, and a big drum. The drum is an instrument related to the human destructiveness (see about E. Fromm) and rapture (for example in shamanism, see about M. Eliade).
Thus sinful aspects are strictly linked to  magical powers associated with musical instruments. Another example is that the bagpipes is also the icon of eternity of life (a challenge to God), because never stops its breathe.

» For an explanation and a operative application of the relationship between “Disharmony / Dream / Demoniac” see my recent pubblication “Dreamworking / Suono Sacro Sogno" (currently available in italian, soon in english too) that explores the Underworld sphere of dream through a mystical use of disharmony. The essay is attached to a musical ritual opus for dream control.
